Japanese Poetry...

I was sort of in between watching tennis, the news, and this Japanese movie on SBS last nite that was semi-doco, altho it was suppose to be based on a true story, or something like that...It is called "Sada" after the main character, and like Memoirs or any other novel about a girl becoming a geisha and soaring to fame in the era of the mid 1930s...Sada's story is similar. She was raped at 14 and so she decided that she might as well make money from her body after it was used in such a way...pretty sad really. She has a fetish for eating donuts, but i missed the beginning so i'm not 100% sure as to why.

I really enjoyed the way they filmed the movie. It didnt get a good rating from the reviews in the TV Guide, but i thought it was interesting. What i really enjoyed were the proverbs and the poetic things the men were saying to her, or she would be saying to them.

The one piece of poetry that i still recall was said by the Restaurant owner, that she became a mistress to shortly after she decided to stop prostituting herself and work at the restaurant.

He said to her, well he really sang it:

"If you have dreams of your lover, you're not really in love...
If you are genuinely in love, you won't be sleeping at all..."

Her father who was sick, which probably also propelled her to prostitution (so she could afford to pay for medicine and doctors for him) said to her after she asked if he could see people's soul?

"Can you still see other people's soul, father? Can you see mine?"

"Smile for me."

*Sada smiles an impish smile*

"Smile wider."

*Sada smiles widely*

"Yes, I can see your soul...The mountains, the trees, the sun and the rain can see your soul too. You see a person's soul through their smile."
