When i was young, i loved the movie IT (based on Stephen King's novel), i loved watching the Freddy Kruger movies, i pretty much enjoyed watching horror movies.
Today, the calibre of horror movies is just pathetic. Or perhaps i am older now and therefore, i fear more less than i feared even when i was young (and i really didnt fear much back then).
I really enjoy watching crafty, thrilling, intelligent, play-with-your-mind type of movies. Movies that make you think. Which probably explains why i enjoy Veronica Mars and House so much, they make me think. They fulfil my curiosity. They challenge my problem solving abilities. My mind gets a workout.
Which is also probably why i enjoyed watching Irreversible (French, R-rated thriller). Well, i'm not sure if "enjoyed" is the appropriate word to use...because it scared the bejeezus out of me. It really made me wonder what kind of monstrosity lies within a person to commit such a crime.
For some reason, when i watched Donnie Darko (Director's cut), i just didnt find it compelling to me. Or perhaps i didnt give it a fair chance, since i went to watch it with a friend who was so self-assured that i would love it, that i chose to prove him wrong...and basically picked at all the things that i didnt like about the movie...and ended up giving it a thumbs-down.
This weekend, i will be watching Hard Candy. And i am looking forward to it. Apparently there is a scene in which all men will grimace and shudder empathising with the paedophile, simply because he is a man. The movie is about a teen girl meeting a 30 y/o man she met off the internet. She is under age and you are given the impression that he has lured her out to snare her, as paedophiles do...but then the story twists and you are lead to think that she has lured him...and then the story continues.
I think the movie will be interesting and mind boggling. It will definitely give me something to talk about. I wonder if they will have a 60 second disclaimer at the beginning of the movie advising the viewers that there will be horrific scenes, just like Irreversible, and ask that if you cant stomach it, to leave the cinemas immediately...?
I'll be back with a review after watching it on Saturday.

Let me know how you go with Hard Candy. I've been catching reviews on the movie and it sounds excellent. The horror scene has something to do with the thirteen year old girl with the red hoodie and an ice-pick apparently. Hmm. Definitely interested in reading your review.
Irreversible was disturbing. The Monica Bellucci rape scene in the underground tunnel made me sick. Same as the scene in Wolf Creek where the fighting self-sufficient heroine gets her spinal cord severed. Argh. Why do we do this to ourselves?!
