Impromptu Alterna-Date...

He asked me to go watch Earl Gray at a local RSL last night. He wanted to go to a live acoustic show...he heard of this guy and sampled some of his music and thought it was really good...i listened to some of it online and thought i would give it a shot. Hey, it was free! Why would i say no, when i have nothing better to do on a Thursday night at home?

So, he picked me up at 10 to 9. We drove to the RSL...parked...walked into the RSL and signed ourselves in. The support act, Melanie Horsnell, was singing and playing her guitar...we missed a part of her act. But for the 20 minutes or so that she played and we listened...i think i fell in love. Not with her personally, but with her voice, the music, the way it made me drift away to some better place.

She's so cute, in that quirky musician sorta way, playing sad songs with really happy beats and melodies. But i really enjoyed them. My best friend did too...he describes it as Sunday morning music...which he really likes.

As i listened i formed an analogy of her singing, comparing it to wine.

I would say that she is like a fruity semillon or reisling, aged in a stainless steel barrel. Her voice is fresh and smooth with the hint of passionfruit and honey. And yet there is something woody about it, which makes me wonder whether she would be better described as a well oaked red wine? Something spicy like the Petersons (Armidale) Shiraz from 2005.

Irrespective of which wine her voice reminds me of, I enjoyed her performance more than I enjoyed Earl Gray.

But Earl Gray has one up on Melanie Horsnell. This guy is cute! He can just smile all my worries away. Its a shame that when he performs, he does this funny "bend-at-the-middle" thing with his body and he likes to kick his left leg in the air every so often...say like every 4th beat or so. After a while you do get use to the way he performs, but at the beginning, it just really made me wonder...?

O_o

I have to agree with my best friend on his comment about Earl Gray, wishing that he doesnt turn out to be a one hit wonder. His first song, which got him into being a musician is called "Bad Luck". Great song, pity all the other songs weren't as memorable. He plans on releasing his first album under the title of "Not for sale", which happens to be another one of his songs. He likes irony. He also has a song called "Sarah"...which reminded me of Eskimo Joe and their song "Sarah"...(on their "Black fingernail, Red wine" album).

It would be a shame if either of them fail to make it...

I gotta say, i appreciate the local RSL clubs taking on "Acoustic Night" to support up and coming local acts...and providing it all free of charge. *3 cheers*

It was a fun evening, I even made it home before 11pm, just in time for bed.

And now, for the real Alterna-Date...
;)
