I've noticed with the movies I have watched recently...they are movies which are limited in dialogue. A lot has been left to the music to envoke emotions and to transcend between different scenes.
When i watched Lost in Translation last year (or was it early this year?), during the Moonlight Cinemas...it was like a new thing...dialogue was minimal...you had to be more observant to the actions of the actors using ur eyes, rather than paying attention by listening with your ears...
I caught the Triplets of Belleville (cartoon) during the French Film Fest, and that was also a movie with little speech between characters. In that sense, its good for me in terms of translating the French to English. But if you fail to pay attention, you will possibly fail to fully understand the movie as it is told via the characters expressions and actions, and the soundtrack of the movie.
About a fortnite ago, we went to watch Zatoichi at Dendy's. Its a Japanese musical/action type of movie. It was suppose to rival movies of the like as Kill Bill vol. 1 and 2. Once again, the dialogue was limited...very short and sweet...the farmers in the scene incorporated the use of their farming utensils as though they were musical instruments...they even have a tap dance sequence!
I was a bit disappointed by the ending...but then i was disappointed by the ending in Kill Bill vol. 2.
Yesterday, i went watch "The Consequences of Love" - part of the Italian Film Fest in Leichardt. Once again, i find myself watching a movie that has little dialogue...it was reviewed as an Italian movie that was much a thriller like "The Usual Suspects"...i, perhaps, anticipated much more...there was little violence, or action...maybe i didnt delve into the movie as much as i should have? It was very subtle...there were some high points where some sarcastic comments shone through...amazingly enough, i understood and laughed on que!
He said the highlight was the 2 BMWs in the movie and the way the movie ended, as in his opinion...it could not have ended in any other plausible way! Out of 4 stars, he would give it 1...im leaning towards giving it 2.5 stars.
So, i disagree.
I dont know what made it interesting to me...maybe its because im trying to learn to express more without expressing too much, by cutting out my dialogue!
He is always reminding me that actions speak louder than words. im always arguing that women prefer verbal communication...
One male friend puts it nicely when he said:
"The way to a woman's heart is through her ears, the way to a man's heart is through his stomach!"
I really agree with this friend's comment...but lets leave it at that!
Basically, i am making my attempt to just absorb and observe actions and i am trying awfully hard to eliminate verbal communication as the only means to understanding. Which is probably why i like those movies so much, they are quietly teaching me something...a life lesson perhaps?
